Universidad Veracruzana, founded in 1944, is one of Mexico’s largest public higher education institutions. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, it also offers non-formal education programmes in a wide variety of academic areas. At present, student enrollment exceeds 80,000. UV also carries out other substantive activities such as research, cultural dissemination and social responsibility. UV is present throughout the state of Veracruz in 5 university campus: Xalapa (capital of the state of Veracruz), Veracruz city, Poza Rica, Orizaba-Córdoba and Coatzacoalcos. Inside UV, the Intercultural University of Veracruz (Universidad Veracruzana Intercultural, UVI; cf. www.uv.mx/uvi), was created in 2015 to attend the state’s indigenous, Afrodescendant and/or rural students in their regions of origin, through specific campus located in indigenous communities inside the Huasteca region, the Totonacapan region, the Grandes Montañas region and the Selvas region.
